The club has been in negotiations with Iron County and the BLM for a great length of time to obtain a permanent flying site.  Through the efforts of our faithful members it appears we may be getting closer.  The County has been promoting the use of the Three Peaks Recreational Area as an all inclusive public use area and has been doing many things to aid our club in providing a flying field.

July, 2013 In July of 2013, the BLM along with help from the County as well as local businesses and interested parties was able to complete the installation of a permanent asphalt surface on the runway.  This has been a long process but we as a club could not be happier with the results.
August 30, 2011 The club spent some time putting together some semi-permanent starting tables at the field.  These tables use a concrete top surface placed on cinder blocks for support and have proved to be very handy for the flyers for assembling and tuning their planes.
September 15, 2008 The County and the BLM have finished the shade awning at the flying site.  The awning is 12 feet wide and 40 feet long and has added a nice element to the site.  Click here for more information.
August 12, 2008 The County has began forming the area where the concrete pad will be set for the shade awning.  According to the crew that is doing the work, the concrete should be poured sometime around the 18th or 19th of August.  They also said that the shade awning is still due in sometime around the middle of September and should be installed around that time.  For anyone who is planning to fly at the field anytime in the near future, please be aware of the work that is being done and be careful not to disturb the forms, etc.  There should be no problem with flying at the field, we just want to make sure that the work crew is able to complete the pad with no troubles.
July 26, 2008 Work has pretty much stopped on the runway area for the season, however the runway is hard packed and there is very little dust.  It is a very good surface to fly from and has held up extremely well.  The BLM has informed us that work will begin very soon on the concrete pad for the shade awning and the awning is scheduled to be installed sometime in early to mid September.
June 13, 2008 Work has continued over the last few weeks to improve the runway.  Also, the BLM secured a contractor to improve the access road and the parking lot.  Within the next couple of days the crews from the County landfill and the road department will be putting the finishing touches on the runway.  Because of the County's schedule, it has been a little difficult for them to make time and free the equipment to do so, however, members of the County and BLM have worked diligently to make the runway flyable for the summer.  There is still a long way to go, but the field is shaping up and the runway is in very good shape at the moment.  A great big thanks is extended to all of those who have done such a great job on the runway and the area.  Click here for more information.
May 14 & 15, 2008 The County was able to send a crew out over these two days to begin doing some work on the runway.  A crew from the County Landfill brought out a large scraper, (donated by Wheeler Machinery), and a grader to begin moving dirt from the South end of the runway to the North end.  They worked very hard over the 2 day period and were able to move ALOT of dirt.  Click here for more information.
February 28, 2008 We were fortunate enough to have a visit from the new Outdoor Rec. Planner from the BLM during our February club meeting.  She was a fountain of information and things are looking very promising for the flying site as far as more improvements during the coming year.  According to her information, the BLM is in the final stages of purchasing a 12' X 40' awning to go over the pit/pilot area.  This may also include some very sturdy benches as well.  The flying site is coming along and we are looking forward to many years of fun and exciting flying.
August 1, 2007 Progress on the field is at a lull for the time being.  The Summer months are very busy for the entities involved such as the BLM, County and City.  We are hoping to get some more done on the improvement of the field this fall and spring, but it will depend on schedules and available funds.  We should hear more very soon.
May 28, 2007 We have officially had some successful flights from the new field.  A small group of club members met at the flying site on Saturday, May 26, 2007.  We did a quick walk around and picked up some of the bigger rocks and sticks and then got some flying in, not only on Saturday but also on Sunday and Monday of the memorial day weekend.  Click here for more information.
May 23, 2007 There has been a little more progress on the flying site.  We have finally found an organization that is willing to come out and move the debris piles.  I went by the field today after work and they have begun making the long small piles into bigger piles for ease of movement.  If the weather holds out, they may be able to finish by Thursday or Friday of this week, (May 24th or May 25th).  More updates coming soon.
April 17, 2007 The county has been out to the site once again to move more dirt and do some leveling.  We are still trying to work out the details as to how we are going to get the debris moved off of the field, whether it will be up to the club or the County or the BLM.  The surface of the runway is now almost completely clear of brush and is fairly level.  There is still a sizable elevation change, but may not be enough to worry about at the moment.  That will remain to be seen.  It is highly encouraged that anyone who may be interested should go out and see the site.  It would be helpful to get more input from any and all involved.
March 1, 2007 Work continues on the flying site.  The BLM has decided that there is too much dirt mixed in with the brush that was removed from the area and it cannot be burned.  They are in the process of collecting formal bids for the removal of the debris from not only the flying site but from the other improved areas as well.  In addition, the county was able to get a grader to the site again and clear more brush from the runway.  There is very little brush left but we are still needing to get the area smooth and more level before it can be a suitable surface to fly from.  Plans are in the works to get this done shortly, hopefully we can be flying from the site before summer.
February 9, 2007 More work has been completed on the fencing and the runway has been marked off.  We are trying to find out if the county or BLM will be out again soon with more equipment to level the field.  If not, we may look for a contractor that can give us a cost break for the dirtwork.  Click here for more information.
January 17, 2007 A few more pictures after the area had been cleared.  With the recent snowfall it is very easy to see the outline of the area.  Hopefully, the county or BLM can get more workers out in the near future to do more on the field.  Click here for more information.
January 11, 2007 This morning a couple of the club members took a ride out to the flying site to see the progress.  The county had brought out two graders and a fencing crew and the BLM representatives were on hand as well.  The parking lot area and the runway area have been cleared and the fencing around the parking lot and cleared area is being installed.  Click here for more information.
January 10, 2007 Received an E-mail from the BLM today.  They have noted that they are planning on sending a crew out to the location today to begin work on the parking lot and fencing around the area.  They also said that they were going to have a grader at the site tomorrow, (Jan. 11), to begin clearing the area.  I took a drive to the site after work today and yes, indeed, they have begun clearing the parking area and there are some fence posts up on one side of the parking area.
December 15, 2006 Representatives from the BLM have contacted us to say they may be able to get a crew to go out and begin clearing at least the parking area and roadway into the flying site.  The plan is to hopefully start this sometime in January.  Weather may be a factor, but there is a chance we may see further progress shortly.
August 18, 2006 We have spoken with representatives from both the City and the County and both have assured us that we can gain help from them with the development of the site. With any luck, we could begin to see progress on the flying field by the fall of this year.
May 25, 2006 After a lot of meetings, a lot of public comments, and a lot of signatures, the Three Peaks project has been approved by the State and local BLM offices, and improvements and construction will start this year.  The flying field has been approved and we have the go ahead to start working on it.  We are in need of volunteers and resources, so if you are willing to help  please let us know.  You can also check the forum for more updates.
June 15, 2004 Meetings have been continuing with the BLM about the area at Three Peaks for a flying site.  We have submitted a proposal and a layout of what we would like to have included at the site.  It was received with some enthusiasm and it sounds like we may be closer yet to having a flying site.  Our flying field committee took the time to go to the site and stake out the proposed area.  We will soon meet again with the BLM and actually travel to the site to see if it will be suitable.
May 1, 2004 Our club has been contacted by the owners of the moto-cross track here in town.  The opinion of the people at the facility is one that they are very interested in having us set up a field in the area.  We have been in discussions with them for awhile and have submitted a proposal for a site.  More information will be posted as it becomes available.
April 22, 2004 During our April, 2004 club meeting, Mr. R. L. Gardner was kind enough to stop and speak to the club about the current property situation at the Three Peaks site.  According to Mr. Gardner, the BLM will be releasing a report sometime around January or February 2005 concerning the land use of the area.  It does not appear that we will not be able to do anything as far as gaining use of the site until after that time.
March 7, 2003 A few of our members took a trip to the Three Peaks area to look at one of the proposed flying sites.  The site is already very level and has very few trees.  It is approximately .3 miles from the soon to be improved road that makes the "loop" around Three Peaks.  The members that have been to the area have given their input and for the most part, the consensus seems to be that this may be a good spot.  More input is desperately needed from any interested parties as it is getting to be crucial that we give the County and BLM as much input as possible, as soon as possible.   Click here to see more information on the proposed site.
